Brasserie Val-Dieu makes crackers out of beer trotters

With a beer, of course, comes a refreshment. And preferably a snack that is balanced and good for the environment. Recently, Val-Dieu was the first Belgian brewer to launch a new product innovation: crackers based on beer marc, a residual product from brewing beer.

A balanced and circular snack

In mid-September, Brasserie Val-Dieu proudly presented its renovated and high-tech brewery. And it had an additional surprise up its sleeve: "At the same time, we revealed our latest product innovation, crackers made from beer marc. This makes us the first brewer in Belgium to market the crackers," says commercial director Lionel Delbart.

"It's a way to repurpose residual products from beer. The valorization of beer marc has been used for years for animal feed and still too little for human food. The crackers contain 37% beer marc."

Chock full of protein

In addition to the circular aspect, the crackers contain a host of nutrients. "The crackers are rich in fiber and protein and contain hardly any fats and are also low in calories. In short, a balanced snack or snacks with apero," Lionel said.

Currently, the crackers come in 3 flavors: tomato-oregano, smoked paprika and salt and pepper with sesame.
