Not only in times of rising energy prices, energy efficiency is one of the most important goals of the industry. The highly efficient components from NORD DRIVESYSTEMS help reduce the energy consumption of drive systems. In addition, the drive specialist offers its customers energy-related advice.
"We help our customers save energy," is how Jörg Niermann, head of marketing, sums up one of the main policies of NORD DRIVESYSTEMS. The company's drive components are increasingly optimized in terms of energy efficiency. A study by the German VDMA and the management consulting firm Boston Consulting Group showed that innovative technologies in machine and plant construction can help reduce CO2 emissions by up to 86 percent across industry. "And we want to support our customers in exploiting their savings potential," Niermann said.

With the IE5+ synchronous motor, NORD sets new standards in energy efficiency with an efficiency of up to 95 percent. Thanks to permanent magnet synchronous motor technology (PMSM), the motor achieves this high efficiency relatively consistently over a wide speed and torque range and also delivers very good performance in terms of energy consumption in the part-load range. This amounts to surpassing even the highest defined energy efficiency class IE5.
Thanks to its wide power range, in addition to energy efficiency, the IE5+ also contributes to lowering the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by enabling version reduction within an entire system. "Especially for systems with multiple drives, such as in intralogistics, there is considerable potential for savings here," says Niermann.
The IE5+ synchronous motor is also part of the patented DuoDrive gearmotor, where it is integrated into a single-stage planar gearbox. Calculated through the system, the gearmotor achieves efficiencies of up to 92 percent, one of the highest efficiencies on the market in this power class. "The fewer interfaces, the higher the system efficiency," explains Jörg Niermann. Integration of the drive in the gearbox housing reduces the installation space, as well as the number of wear parts and thus the maintenance effort. The elimination of interfaces between the components also significantly reduces the risk of fluid ingress and bacterial contamination.
The DuoDrive was specially developed for intralogistics and the food industry. In an application for the beverage industry, NORD conducted an energy efficiency study. In an exhibition demo, where bottles are transported in two circular systems, the drive specialist compared the energy consumption of two drive configurations: first, a DuoDrive including a NORDAC PRO SK 500E control cabinet frequency inverter, and second, a typical IE3 asynchronous motor with bevel gearbox and decentralized frequency inverter. This showed that the DuoDrive consumed up to 50 percent less energy.
NORD DRIVESYSTEMS not only helps its customers discover and realize such potential savings with its efficient components, but also with a special service. The NORD ECO service checks the customer's installed drives in terms of energy efficiency, dimensioning and number of versions. Based on this, NORD draws up an energy efficiency concept that identifies possible savings potential and is tailored to the customer's requirements.
"In times of rising energy prices, increasing energy efficiency is becoming increasingly relevant," emphasizes Jörg Niermann. As a committed family company, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS therefore attaches great importance to reducing its ecological footprint in the interest of future generations and the fight against climate change.
