B&R has equipped the ACOPOS P3 servo drive with a Safe Torque provision. This allows numerous safety functions to be used that previously required an external sensor. The cost of complying with the machinery directive is thus reduced.
The Safe Torque provision is based on an internal current measurement and enables the safety functions Safely Limited Torque (SLT), Safe Speed Observer (SSO) and Safe Brake Test (SBT). The functions are suitable for safety applications up to level SIL 2 / PL d / Cat. 3.
For example, the SLT function can be used to reliably limit the torque on the drive system. Thus, mechanical overloads can be avoided and safely averted. In addition, mechanical designs can be made more cost-effective with SLT. SLT also minimizes the risk of operators being injured by entrapment or crushing while working on a machine.
The SSO function is a virtual speed sensor that allows the SLS safety function to be used without the need for a safe encoder. This is especially useful when using linear or torque motors, as these types of motors usually do not have an integrated safe encoder.
The SBT function can be used to safely monitor and control the operation of a holding brake. The data collected provides insight into the condition of the brake and any damage or wear.
