WEG releases decentralized drive system with WG20 geared motors and MW500 variable speed drives

Compared to traditional drives, this compact, decentralized drive package offers lower energy consumption, a compact footprint and also more flexibility.

The decentralized drive system can be used for a wide variety of applications, including machinery in intralogistics, such as warehouse systems and conveyors. Other possible applications include speed-controlled fans, pumps and filling systems widely used in the food industry.

MW500 series frequency inverters can be used for various applications in the power range from 0.12 to 9.2 kW with mains voltage between 380-480 V. The equipment is available in three sizes (A, B and C) with power ratings from 0.12 to 1.5 kW for 200-240 V with WEG's WG20 series gearmotors available in axial, parallel and helical (bevel gear) models with helical gearing.

When the WG20 gearmotor is combined in this configuration with an EUSAS integral motor from WEG, it offers a host of benefits to the user, as the EUSAS motor in AC drive mode (with 100/120 Hz frequency) delivers double the power at constant torque.

"By combining the MW500 VSD and WG20 gearmotor with an EUSAS integral motor, we show how incredibly compact, powerful and efficient decentralized drive solutions can be," according to Norbert Reisner, head of product engineering at Watt Drive, a subsidiary of WEG.

These motors are suitable for use in Europe, the U.S. or in Asia because they support a wide voltage range and offer voltage switching capability. In addition, as with all gearmotors in the WG20 series, the EUSAS motor can control each drive individually in AC drive mode and vary the speed depending on the requirements of the specific application.

The MW500's rugged housing allows the IP66 and NEMA 4X-rated AC drive to be used in outdoor environments. The VSD can be mounted directly on the motor terminal box or on the wall and is suitable for outdoor applications. This eliminates the need for motor wiring and the control cabinet, reducing installation and commissioning effort and costs.

The MW500 also comes with an energy-saving option, which allows it to reduce the at light loads. This yields significant energy savings, especially with partial loads.
