European wine producers and suppliers are subject to strict regulations, including with regard to labeling. For example, they must be able to provide the most accurate and up-to-date information on the ingredients and nutritional value of the products, which is not so evident with wine with its variable composition. Markem-Imaje, the global provider of end-to-end supply chain solutions and industrial marking and coding systems, helped the Lunelli Group, a renowned Italian player, adapt the labeling for its wine to European regulations.
The Lunelli family has been in the wine business for more than five generations. It is dedicated to producing high quality wines and is proud to offer its customers a unique blend of tradition and innovation. This is also reflected in its various wines, which are unique and full of character. Among the brands that stand out within the Lunelli Group are Bisol1542 and Jeio, which are represented by the Bisol1542 winery with a history dating back to 1542. The buildings of this producer, located in the hills of Valdobbiadene, have been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Its Bisol1542 labels feature information about the different nuances of its Prosecco Superiore di Valdobbiadene, which are influenced by the unique combination of soils, vintages and vineyards. In turn, the Jeio brand is distinguished by cuvées with a young, unmistakable and cosmopolitan appeal.
According to the EU Regulation 2021/2117, in force since December, all producers and suppliers of wine must always display the most accurate and up-to-date information on the ingredients and nutritional value of their products. With wine, this is not so obvious, as the composition often changes. The Lunelli Group found the solution to this with Markem-Imaje, which has long had a strong reputation for end-to-end supply chain solutions and industrial marking and coding systems.
"With our thermal transfer printer SmartDate X65® and the CoLOS® software, we ensure that the winery can comply with regulations, and even in a very simple way. Ingredients and nutritional value data is managed automatically, without the need for manual labeling or verification," says one at Markem-Imaje. "To comply with the 'EU wine regulation,' as it is usually called, up-to-date ingredient and nutritional data must be recorded for each batch of wine, and scannable QR codes must also be affixed, allowing one to access that data as well. Lunelli and other users can now generate such codes on-the-fly by combining the software with the transfer printer, which excels at printing QR codes on paper or plastic labels on bottles during the production process. Our CoLOS® software is fully integrated into the Lunelli Group's ERP system. This allows it to automatically upload all data that becomes available via the special QR code on the bottle label to the production line and print it there. The software also makes it possible to adapt the multiple variations required for the different label designs to the specific needs of each brand."
Markem-Imaje is a specialist in its field with more than 50,000 customers worldwide. They benefit from the expertise of a manufacturer, including 30 years of experience in thermal transfer printing technology. "Since users can quickly and easily change the print color of our printers, it is easy to customize any label," states one at the manufacturer. "When then linked to CoLOS® software and an ERP, they can monitor production in real time, reducing waste and energy consumption and improving operational efficiency and environmental impact."
Leonida Fedrigo, production & maintenance manager at the Lunelli Group, is clear: "Thanks to Markem-Imaje's innovative solutions, we were able to use the entire stock of labels, without throwing them away, at no extra cost to the company and respecting the value of sustainability, which is fundamental for all brands within our group. This year Bisol1542 celebrates its 10th anniversary within the Lunelli Group. Moreover, in 2023, the winery tripled the number of awards from the best international critics."
